The book hunt continues…

Over the last few weeks I have devoted a little more time and money towards topping up books, I really enjoy book hunting and had a lot of fun over the last few weeks.

Last Friday I decided to go on an overdue Frankston book hunt and came away with a great haul. I visited all the local stores, Salvos, Vinnies, Save the Children, RSPCA etc. All these stores can yield a nice crop, especially of one doesn’t go often, and it had been a while.

I picked up a few books in all the thrift stores mentioned above, but the nice and not necessarily valuable find was a 36 Volume Charles Dickens collection, only Herron but some sort of centennial edition of each volume. The Save the Children thrift store had these, I made an offer for the entire collection and they gladly accepted, the lady at the counter even helped me take the books to the Taxi rank, as some of you are aware I’m on foot these days.

The Tolkien Millenium Edition set was purchased on eBay, i found it at a decent price even though it is a little sun faded.

On Monday i had not gotten the book hunting bug out of my system so I caught the bus to Savers Carrum Downs & Vinnies Carrum Downs, some really decent books, again I had not been there for a good three weeks, and was happy to snap up a few nice titles.

On Tuesday I managed to get a lift to Cranbourne, there is a Vinnies and a Salvos not far from each other. The Vinnies was dissapointing… don’t get me wrong its a great store, but I only found one book… I had better luck at the Salvos and walked out with a bunch of books.

Again I had a lot of relatively inexpensive fun whilst helping the community… Hopefully I can find time to start adding books to the website again.. as there is a backlog of 500+ books at the moment.

That’s it, hope you come back and read about some of our adventures, till the next treasure hunt.

1299 Books now listed on the website.

I have spent the last 6-7 days adding stock to the website, there were a lot of books accumulated in the “To List” pile over all i think it took me around 40 hours to get around 200 done. For now this is all the stock I will be putting up.. i have another 200+ books waiting to be listed.. they are sold on commission for a friend… I have not had the motivation to get started on them… even though they have been waiting for around a year now.

Anyway a few photos below of the shelves of books books added this last week.. I am glad it’s done and need a few days break before I even contemplate adding the rest.

Some of the rows of books are double stacked, and the lesson learn from this last listing session is to get them listed as soon as they are bought. So I will endeavour from now on to list books after every book hunt.

Can’t wait for the next treasure hunt, but with the high temperatures I may wait another week before heading out.

Adding Stock To The Website – A Few Months Of Acquisitions.

We have not listed books for a while, even though we buy new books on a regular basis… Starting to have a bit of a backlog.

This week I will start adding the above books, there’s also a pile of rare Science Fiction from the 50’s 60’s & 70s to add, I also have a colleague buying books for the store on the other side of town… Small pile there waiting for me to pick them up ASAP.

So yes keep your eyes peeled for new stock in the store, we are starting to get a few sales finally, so I need to stay on top of it.

26 Degrees, Treasure hunting in Spring, Carrum Downs & Frankston

So, it seems spring has finally decided to appear, an amazing day with a temperature of 26c. I had access to a car today, as well as a little spare cash, have been mostly stuck at home the last week or so, figured it would be a great chance to do some book hunting.

We drove to Savers in Carrum Downs, I have mentioned the address several times, so wont go into details. Quite a few books today, I mean new stock. There was a large Star Wars paper back set in the cabinet “Special” section. I don’t often buy paper backs – so I decided to move on happy with the 4 or 5 books I picked up.

We drove to the Vinnies on Frankston Dandenong Road in Carrum Downs, many new books – I picked out maybe 10 Hard Cover 1st editions, some quite rare others just staples for the shop. I must mention as a tiny bit of advertising for the store… They had a sale on dvds… 10 DVDs for 2$, an absolutely insane bargain, for anyone looking for movies or even gifts.

I didn’t quite have enough book hunting at this stage, the access to the car was over. I made way to Frankston on foot (I had other errands to run anyway). Stopped at my favourite tobacconist, had my little Rum Mini Cigars and walked down to the RSCPA shop across from my favourite cafe. Not much new stock but I did pickup an unread boxed Fifty Shades trilogy in paper back for a few dollars, also 2 Stephen Lawhead books which appear to be quite rare and semi valuable.

Not used to the heat, I decided to go home after I ran some errands, so here I am writing this blog (after a short rest). As always check out the thrift stores in you area, leading up to Christmas it gives these organisations funds to help those in need and having a worse holiday period than you. Be kind, if you don’t like used goods, consider a small donation to your favourite charity.

Till the next treasure hunt (coming soon).

Sunday Market & Quick Thrift Store Hunt

The other day I was in Central Frankston, I thought I would check out the Salvos Store, I had been there a few days earlier… But they already had more new books, a few nice finds… including a nice reading copy of a book about Australian culture by George Negus, I had thoroughly enjoyed his other books about Italy & The Middle East. I Look forward to reading it before it is added to the store, some other interesting and semi valuable books are in the lot below.

Yesterday was Market day in Frankston, it’s only a small market usually but I think this was one of the 1st weekends it was open since the lockdown, not many stall at all maybe 6-7, nothing major there this week… But looking forward to summer and many more stalls being there. I will be making a trip to Camberwell Market soon, but this week in Frankston apart from a few Stephen King Hard covers, there really wasn’t much.

Keep checking the blog for more treasure hunts, and secret hunting locations, till the next time 🙂
