Short Stop in Mornington.

I have started to go on regular book hunts again, once if not several times a week. I have a tiny bit more time and spending money, and as I am enjoying each trip… Why Not?

Today I managed to get a lift to Mornington, theres a stretch of road (Mornington-Tyabb Rd) that has a slew of thrift stores and a recyclign centre, it was only a short trip and I did nit get a chance to visit all the stores there due to financial constraints…. hint hint… buy more books :)D

But I did visit the St Vincent De Paul Op-Shop and man I have to say amazing variety, a lot of books today and if I had more storage space would have even snapped up a bunch of paper backs.. if you know the store… you would know we specialise mainly in Hard Cover books. The prices here were fantastic, rare to find some of the more commercial thrift stores being this affordable.. I walked out with a bag of books without breaking the bank… Would highly recommend visiting this store.

A few doors down another fantastic thrift store.. relatively recent.. It has been there a while but not as long as the Salvos or the Vinnies. It is called “The Comminity Caring Inc.” Great shop, rows and rows of books, a lot more collectable stuff in display cabinets, again, retail therapy at a very modest cost. I walked away with another bag of books, again very affordable…

On this run I would normally visit the Salvos 500m down the road, but as I had bought quite a few books at the other stores I decided to not even venture into the Salvos. I did however visit the Recycling centre, they also stock books, but I couldn’t find anything worth listing on the store. It’s a great place to visit and one can occassionally find a treasure… If you are in Mornington with 30-60 minutes to kill… and some money burning a hole in your pocket… this stretch of road is one of the best thrift store locales that I have encountered. Below are some photos of books I purchased today.

I cannot say this enough, but these organisations do so much for local communities… if you think thrift store are not for you… they are not just full of vintage clothing, some amazing antiques, furninture can be found there.. I love book hunting and thats my primary reason for visiting… Go for a drive, see if anything catches your fancy.. Support your local thrift stores.

Until the next treasure hunt.

The book hunt continues…

Over the last few weeks I have devoted a little more time and money towards topping up books, I really enjoy book hunting and had a lot of fun over the last few weeks.

Last Friday I decided to go on an overdue Frankston book hunt and came away with a great haul. I visited all the local stores, Salvos, Vinnies, Save the Children, RSPCA etc. All these stores can yield a nice crop, especially of one doesn’t go often, and it had been a while.

I picked up a few books in all the thrift stores mentioned above, but the nice and not necessarily valuable find was a 36 Volume Charles Dickens collection, only Herron but some sort of centennial edition of each volume. The Save the Children thrift store had these, I made an offer for the entire collection and they gladly accepted, the lady at the counter even helped me take the books to the Taxi rank, as some of you are aware I’m on foot these days.

The Tolkien Millenium Edition set was purchased on eBay, i found it at a decent price even though it is a little sun faded.

On Monday i had not gotten the book hunting bug out of my system so I caught the bus to Savers Carrum Downs & Vinnies Carrum Downs, some really decent books, again I had not been there for a good three weeks, and was happy to snap up a few nice titles.

On Tuesday I managed to get a lift to Cranbourne, there is a Vinnies and a Salvos not far from each other. The Vinnies was dissapointing… don’t get me wrong its a great store, but I only found one book… I had better luck at the Salvos and walked out with a bunch of books.

Again I had a lot of relatively inexpensive fun whilst helping the community… Hopefully I can find time to start adding books to the website again.. as there is a backlog of 500+ books at the moment.

That’s it, hope you come back and read about some of our adventures, till the next treasure hunt.

And I Miss You, Like a Lonely Book In a Thrift Store :)D

I had the pleasure of visiting a thrift store i rarely get to go to.. well two thrift stores next to each other.. In Chelsea Heights. The Vinnies and Salvo’s I have blogged about in the past.

The thing worth mentioning about them both is… that they are very fairly priced.. for books at least anyway. The Vinnies has a massive book section and i managed to find about 10 hard cover 1st editions. Some great books… The Salvo’s a great store but the book section appears to have shrunk somewhat.. but prices almost half of some of the other Salvo’s stores i go to.

Was a great trip, I managed to get a lift there, very happy with the books I picked up today, nothing super valuable but excellent staples for a book shop.

The Paladin of Souls was signed by the author, was really happy about finding that one… Anyway.. till the next treasure hunt.

Book Hunting May & June 2022

I have been super busy over the last 2-3 months, and not had a chance to do a proper blog for a while. I hvae however been doing quite a lot of book hunting. The weather here is icey and wet, so limited by whenI can get about without a car.

I have visited many thrift stores, runs you may be familiar with from other posts, mainly around Frankston & Carrum Downs, I have also been hunting on eBay.

I have been lucky to find a few books I have been looking for, for a long time, managed to snag quite a few deals on eBay over the last few weeks, including an Orwell 1984 facsimile and a bunch of vintage Science Fiction. Some thrift stores I hadn’t been in for a few months were a treasure trove, I have walked out with a bag of book from places I usually struggle to find even 1 or 2 books.

Above are most of the books I managed to buy, i have a backlog of about 4-500 books to add to the website, and hope to find the time over the next few months to do so. In the interim I will continue to go trasure hunting, I really enjoy it.

Till the next book hunt.

We are still book hunting!

Seems like a long while since my last post… I have gotten quite busy with other projects… but the book hunts continue.

Whenever I have a few dollars spare and some time or if I am passing through an area I know with decent books… I usually stop and grab a few books. Not had a chance to list noew books for a while.. I think there may be about 200 new hard covers that I havn’t had a chance to add to the website.

I am running low on space and need to buy some more shelving soon. I will start adding books again in a few weeks… Just don’t have a lot of spare time right now. These books came from Savers in Carrum Downs, Salvo’;s also in Carrum Downs, Vinnies in Carrum Downs and all the usual spots I Visit in Frankston.

Give it some time but I will start doing regular blogs again. Till the next treasure hunt.
